### Original assessment reading: Planting for a Coast, Not a Photograph
Mangroves grow where land and sea meet. Their roots and trunks can slow moving water and reduce some wave energy, while sheltered spaces among the roots provide habitats for young fish. These benefits have made mangrove planting a popular conservation activity.

Yet a photograph of volunteers holding seedlings tells us little about whether a forest will develop. Young trees need suitable water depth, tidal exposure and sediment. Planting on a site chosen mainly because it is easy to reach may produce disappointing survival rates. In one local restoration effort, the areas where young trees survived were not always those that volunteers found easiest to reach.

Restoration also takes time. A row of new seedlings does not provide the same protection as a mature forest, and even a healthy forest cannot remove every coastal risk. Strong storms, changing coastlines and nearby development all affect outcomes. Monitoring after several seasons is more informative than counting how many seedlings went into the ground on one day.

This does not make restoration pointless. It makes careful planning necessary. Protecting existing mangroves, restoring suitable sites and using engineering where needed can complement one another. The question for a coastal community is not which single solution looks most attractive in a campaign, but which combination reduces risk under local conditions.

**示范** “Mangroves can slow waves under some conditions” 不能概括成“Mangroves prevent every flood”。

1. What is the main purpose? A. To report how volunteers are recruited for planting campaigns. B. To show that planting-day totals are the best measure of restoration. C. To explain the benefits and limits of restoring mangroves. D. To compare the financial costs of two coastal engineering projects.

给出证据而非只写positive/negative。

5. 填词：The seedlings ___ (plant) last spring. By the time the next storm arrived, some of them ___ (already / die).

6. 填词：The researchers recommend ___ (check) local conditions before planting. They also explain ___ survival rates differ between sites.

The areas where young trees survived were not always those that volunteers found easiest to reach.

5. were planted；had already died。

6. checking；why。

7. 主干 The areas were not always those；where young trees survived修饰areas，that volunteers found easiest to reach修饰those（=areas），that在从句作found宾语。 not always不等于never。

8. 示例：Restoring mangroves may reduce wave energy and provide habitats, but success depends on local water, sediment and tidal conditions. Planting in convenient places does not guarantee survival. Communities should protect existing forests, assess suitable sites and monitor young trees over time, while recognising that restoration may need to complement engineering rather than replace every other form of coastal protection.

Restore the Right Coast, Monitor the Results。主张：Well-planned mangrove restoration can contribute to coastal protection, but its benefits depend on site conditions and long-term care.

10. 示例：A coastal community should begin by mapping existing mangroves and protecting healthy areas from avoidable damage. Before planting, specialists and local residents should examine tides, water depth and sediment to identify suitable sites. A small trial can then test survival, with records kept through different seasons rather than only on planting day. The community should also compare restoration with other protection measures and plan who will maintain the site. Even careful preparation cannot determine exactly how future storms will affect the coast. The aim should therefore be to reduce risk and learn from monitoring, not to promise that trees will prevent every flood.
