The Colour of the Buttons则只抓无关细节。
A quieter way to share a room
At Northfield College, students had long complained that group discussions disturbed people who wanted to study alone. The library had only two large rooms, and neither could be rebuilt before the next academic year. Rather than choosing between complete silence and unrestricted conversation, staff decided to test a schedule. One room would remain quiet throughout the day. The other would allow group work in the afternoon and quiet study in the morning.
Before the trial, some students predicted that changing rules during the day would be confusing. Staff therefore placed clear signs at the entrance and on each table. They also sent a written explanation through the student newsletter. During the first week, volunteers answered questions near the door. Most of the questions concerned when the afternoon session began, rather than whether group work was permitted at all.
After a month, complaints about discussion noise had fallen. However, this did not mean that everyone was satisfied. A group of students taking an evening course reported that they could only meet in the morning, when both rooms required silence. Students working alone also said that the quiet room became crowded after lunch. These comments revealed a weakness that the total number of complaints did not show: a rule could reduce conflict overall while still making access difficult for particular groups.
The library kept the schedule but reserved a smaller office for morning group meetings twice a week. This was not a permanent solution, since staff sometimes needed the office. It was a limited adjustment based on a specific problem. The staff planned another review at the end of the term, when attendance patterns might change with approaching examinations. Their aim was not to find one perfect rule, but to make limited space useful to people with different needs.
The fall in complaints showed that the new schedule met every student's needs.

2
D。第一段neither could be rebuilt before the next academic year直接支持。
Most of the questions concerned when the afternoon session began。
4
A。第三段A group of students taking an evening course…only meet in the morning;上课在晚上不意味着讨论也有晚间时间。
5
6
Although complaints decreased, the schedule still limited access for some groups of students.
8
Peak demand exceeded the room's capacity, so staff needed to allocate space more fairly. demand与capacity不是同一概念;exceeded过去时。
9
Consultation can help the college balance different needs and make a proportionate response to the inconvenience. help
