Original story: The Folded Map

Nora kept the paper bag on her knees as the bus moved away from the station. Inside were three small plants for her aunt’s new flat. Her aunt had sent directions, but a notice on the bus said that roadworks had changed the usual route.

Across the aisle, a man unfolded and refolded a map. He asked another passenger whether the bus still stopped near Market Street. The passenger shook her head. Nora noticed the man looking towards her bag and pulled it closer. She was already worried about missing her stop and did not feel like talking.

The bus slowed sharply at a temporary traffic light. The bag slid towards the edge of Nora’s knees. Before she could lift it, the man reached across. “Careful,” he said. Nora pulled back, thinking that he was trying to take it. The paper made a sharp tearing sound near one handle.

For a moment they both held the bag. Outside, the bus turned into a street that Nora did not recognise. Her aunt’s directions no longer seemed useful, and the man’s map lay open on the floor beside his shoe.

Paragraph 1 beginning: Nora looked down and saw that his hand was supporting the bottom of the bag.

Paragraph 2 beginning: Together, they spread the map across the empty seat between them.

Owen pulled back when a library volunteer reached for his box of donated books. The volunteer pointed out a split near one handle and held the base steady. Owen set the box down and murmured an apology. They made room on a nearby desk and checked which books needed extra protection. A specific question had cleared up the misunderstanding more effectively than an unfounded suspicion could. This separate example illustrates action verbs; it is not part of Nora’s bus story.

例 “Nora knew the stranger had been lonely for twenty years” 若原文没有信息来源,则视角越界。 The man said he had not travelled this route for years,使她通过可见对话获得信息。

例 “She understood everything and became perfect forever”不可检验且跳跃。

  7. 【主题词汇·辨义】根据语境分别解释reach for、make out、clear up、make room;哪一个不能在本篇直接译成“制造房间”?

  3. 示例:Instead of pulling the bag away again, Nora asked whether he had been trying to catch it and waited for his answer.

  5. 范文:

Nora looked down and saw that his hand was supporting the bottom of the bag. One small pot had tilted towards the opening. “I thought it might fall,” the man explained. Embarrassed, she loosened her grip and thanked him. While she straightened the pot, he picked up the open map from the floor. A circle marked the street where her aunt lived. He was trying to reach the same area but did not know the changed route.

Together, they spread the map across the empty seat between them. Nora found the temporary route notice on the window and compared it with the streets on the map. At the next stop, they checked their choice with the driver. When the correct stop came, the man held the bag steady while she stood. Nora stepped onto the pavement with the plants safe, glad that she had asked a question instead of keeping her first assumption.

  2. reach for伸手去拿;make out辨认(另有其他义,须看宾语writing/map);clear up澄清误会;make room腾出空间,不能逐字译为制造房间。

  3. 示例:She pulled back at first, but he pointed out the torn edge he was supporting. After noticing the damage, she offered an apology and made room for them to examine the bag together.
