Original reading: A Different Kind of Expert
Asha arrived at the primary-school science fair with a box of wooden sticks and a notebook full of calculations. As a senior student, she had volunteered to show younger pupils how to build a bridge. She imagined that they would admire her neat design and ask questions she could easily answer.
The first bridge lasted eight seconds. Then its centre dropped, scattering sticks across the table. A pupil laughed—not unkindly, but loudly enough for Asha to feel her face grow hot. She slid her notebook under the table. Perhaps she could say that she had another appointment.
Yet she did not leave. One small boy was still examining a broken joint. “Why did it fall here?” he asked. Asha opened her mouth, then stopped. “I don’t know yet,” she said. “Shall we test it together and find out?” That was new to her. At school she often waited until she had a complete answer before speaking.
They built three smaller bridges, changing only the spacing of the supports. The pupils pressed down gently, described what they noticed, and asked Asha to write it down. Their suggestions were not all useful, but several challenged assumptions in her original design. By the end of the afternoon, a bridge held the box that had carried the sticks.
On the bus home, Asha found an old sentence in her notebook: “An expert gives answers.” She crossed out the last two words and wrote, “helps people ask better questions.” She still wanted to understand bridges. She was simply less afraid of letting other people see the unfinished work.
After the rehearsal failed, Daniel was reluctant to look at his teammates. He was frustrated rather than angry with them: he had practised, but the timing still went wrong. A sincere apology helped him regain composure. His teammates were sympathetic without pretending the problem did not exist. They encouraged another attempt and changed the sequence. Daniel left relieved, not certain of future success but more optimistic about their ability to improve together.
例 “She checked the address for the third time but kept walking.”
阅读示范 下文中 “Yet she did not leave” 是转折点,表示 Asha 从考虑退出到继续参与。
按先后给四件事排序:①Asha asked the younger pupils to test the bridge;②the first model collapsed;③Asha considered leaving;④the pupils changed the spacing of the supports。
Why did Asha put her notebook under the table? A. To hide her unsuccessful calculations. B. To give it to a pupil. C. To make room for a larger model. D. To keep it clean.
“That” in “That was new to her” refers to what?
Which best describes Asha at the end? A. Willing to learn publicly with others. B. Eager to hide mistakes. C. Certain that rules are useless. D. Uninterested in the bridge.
A Different Kind of Expert

I don’t know yet 并邀请共同测试;证据二:最后把 An expert gives answers 改成 An expert helps people ask better questions。
Asha volunteered at a science fair hoping to be the person with all the answers. When her bridge collapsed, she felt embarrassed and considered leaving. Instead, she admitted her uncertainty and invited younger pupils to test the design with her. Their shared observations improved the bridge and helped her see expertise as guiding inquiry rather than hiding mistakes.
The rejected design was a setback for our team. I offered a sincere apology for ignoring an important measurement. We checked the dimensions together and agreed to test a smaller model first.
